Relative Scale designed and developed eight bilingual experiences with integrated lighting design for the newly constructed Elmwood Park Zoo Welcome Center. Upon entering, guests interact with the Zoo’s core values of care, conservation, and connection via a touch-triggered table and four interactives, covering golden lion tamarins, black-footed ferrets, local turtle species, and conservation, all of which send signals to overhead light boxes to change color based on associated core values. Interactive stations and overhead monitors with mobile QR code submission connect guests with the staff inside the treatment room via usage of a docent tablet with custom designed CMS software. Overhead commissary displays and a Partners In Care interactive educate visitors on meals and tools essential to taking care of the Zoo’s wide variety of animals.
Motion System Development
The number of digital experiences and bilingual functionality required a defined motion system to be designed in conjunction with the visual system. Referencing the hexagons in the physical exhibits, the team used this motif for visual texture and modular UI Systems. Additionally, the three core values were assigned a color scheme used throughout the exhibit.
I used these colors and hexagon motifs to design transitions between interfaces and elements, creating motion studies to share with the team before settling on a final direction. We opted for a gradient transition filling the hexagons instead of a z-space transition which felt unnatural to the upward momentum of the overhead lightbox effects.
I contributed to overhead lighting design by producing lighting studies showing color moving upwards in lightboxes above point of interaction which was used a reference in final installation.
